The UK is the largest European destination for Chinese steel structures (around USD 420 million) and typically transacts at higher unit prices. Large distribution centres, data centres and food cold chain are the main demand drivers. Surrounded by sea and dominated by wind, UK structures are usually governed by wind loading and coastal corrosion; the key market barrier is the EN 1090-1 execution class (EXC) and the associated CE / UKCA marking.
The key UK barrier: EN 1090 and CE / UKCA
Post-Brexit, structural steel components entering the UK must meet UKCA marking requirements, while the EU side uses CE marking; both are based on EN 1090-1. Most logistics and commercial projects require EXC2, with EXC3 for bridges, long spans or critical structures. We deliver material traceability, welding procedures, welder qualifications and inspection records as a complete package to the agreed execution class.
- Production to EN 1090-1 EXC2 / EXC3 with factory production control (FPC) documents
- Welding to BS EN ISO 3834 and BS EN 1090-2, with qualified welders and procedures
- Material certificates, coating checks and inspection records for client and supervisor review
Codes and climate loads
Design follows BS EN 1993 (Eurocode 3) with UK National Annexes, and loads follow BS EN 1991. The UK has an oceanic climate where wind governs and snow is relatively light; coastal and industrial sites need a C3–C4 corrosion environment, with S275 / S355 steel commonly used.
- Wind: basic velocity and terrain factors from the site wind zone, with enhanced roof and cladding fixing
- Corrosion: C4 coastal / C3 inland, hot-dip galvanised or galvanised plus coating
- Fire: intumescent coatings or boards to the UK fire resistance requirement for the building use
- Cladding: roof drainage designed for local rainfall intensity, with insulation and airtightness
Delivery and logistics: Shanghai / Ningbo to Felixstowe, Southampton
Detailing and fabrication take place at our Shanghai and Jiangsu facilities; knocked-down members ship from Shanghai or Ningbo to Felixstowe, Southampton or London Gateway with marking drawings, packing lists and erection guidance.
- Detailing 7–10 days, fabrication 25–35 days, ocean 30–40 days
- FOB / CIF / DAP terms; we assist with UK customs and UKCA documentation
- High loading density: fewer containers per tonne and lower unit freight cost
