Canada is the second largest steel structure market in North America, with warehousing and logistics, data centres, mining and agricultural facilities driving demand. Canada is vast and its climate harsh: ground snow loads exceed 3 kPa in some regions and winter temperatures can reach −40 °C, so low-temperature impact toughness and heavy snow design are the governing conditions; the west coast around Vancouver also needs seismic design. Entering Canada requires design and fabrication to the NBCC and CSA series standards.
The governing conditions: heavy snow and low temperature
Snow loads across most of Canada are significantly higher than in comparable Chinese climate zones, so roof purlins, roof sheeting and drainage must be strengthened for local snow and drifting conditions; cold regions have clear requirements for steel low-temperature impact toughness, so grades must suit the project minimum design temperature. Steel's light weight and short programme are a clear advantage given Canada's limited winter construction window.
- Heavy snow: ground and roof snow loads to NBCC, denser purlins and roof sheeting, snow-guard detailing
- Low temperature: grades with low-temperature impact toughness per the project minimum design temperature, with welding and bolting to cold-weather requirements
- Seismic: design to NBCC seismic parameters on the west coast, with ductile connections
CSA codes and welding certification
Design follows NBCC and CSA S16 (steel structures), cold-formed members follow CSA S136 and welding follows CSA W59. Canada is strict on welding qualification (CSA W47.1 / W55.3 certification), so exported members are usually produced with a certified fabricator or inspected and documented to the client's requirements.
- Design: NBCC loads and CSA S16 member and connection checks, with calculations
- Welding: to CSA W59, with production and inspection organised to W47.1 certification requirements
- Material: CSA G40.21 350W / 300W series, or equivalent ASTM A992 / A36
- Fire: coatings or boards to Canadian fire resistance requirements for the building use
Delivery and logistics: Shanghai / Ningbo to Vancouver, Montreal
Detailing and fabrication take place at our Shanghai and Jiangsu facilities; knocked-down members ship from Shanghai or Ningbo to Vancouver and Montreal with marking drawings, packing lists, erection guidance and the relevant calculations.
- Detailing 10–15 days, fabrication 30–45 days, ocean about 15–30 days
- FOB / CIF / DAP terms; we assist with Canadian customs documents
- High loading density: fewer containers per tonne and lower unit freight cost
