E-commerce and logistics infrastructure expansion, together with semiconductor and display plant construction, drive most steel structure demand in South Korea. After the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, Korean seismic requirements for buildings have tightened, and KBC now imposes clearer constraints on steel seismic detailing. Entering the Korean market requires design and fabrication to the KS material system and KBC, with fire and corrosion protection to local practice.
Seismic and code points in Korea
Design follows the Korean Building Code (KBC) and KS material standards, with seismic force and inter-storey drift taken per KBC and connections to local detailing practice. Korean requirements for low- and mid-rise buildings have become stricter in recent years, making ductile detailing — a "no damage in minor quakes, repairable in moderate ones" approach — a focus of review.
- Seismic force and drift limits per KBC, with ductile connections and bracing
- Material commonly KS D 3503 SS400 and SM490 series, with mill certificates
- We can work with a Korean structural engineer on the review calculations if required
Typhoons, fire and corrosion
Korea is affected by typhoons in summer, with higher wind loads along the coast and in the south; coastal port cities such as Busan and Incheon need a C4 corrosion system. Industrial and logistics buildings set fire requirements by use, and steel can be protected with intumescent coatings or board systems.
- Typhoon: wind loads from the site wind zone, with denser roof and cladding fixing and reinforced edges and corners
- Corrosion: hot-dip galvanising or galvanised plus coating for C4 coastal environments
- Fire: coatings or boards to Korean fire resistance requirements for the building use
- Cladding: roof drainage designed for local rainfall intensity, with insulation and airtightness
Delivery and logistics: Shanghai / Ningbo to Busan, Incheon
Detailing and fabrication take place at our Shanghai and Jiangsu facilities; knocked-down members ship from Shanghai or Ningbo to Busan and Incheon with marking drawings, packing lists and erection guidance, under FOB / CIF / DAP terms.
- Detailing 7–10 days, fabrication 25–35 days, ocean about 3–7 days
- Supply to the KS material system with mill certificates
- High loading density: fewer containers per tonne and lower unit freight cost
