Under the same seismic intensity, steel plants consistently outperform masonry buildings. The secret: ductility and low self-weight.
Many of our clients build in seismic regions — the Philippines, Chile, Indonesia. Two parameters decide how a structure behaves: ductility and self-weight.
Steel is ductile: members dissipate seismic energy through plastic deformation instead of brittle failure. And steel weighs only about 30% of a concrete structure — seismic force is proportional to mass, so a lighter building is pushed less.
In design we apply the seismic intensity of the project's country, and use strong-column/weak-beam principles plus joint verification to ensure the structure deforms but does not collapse. If your plant is in a seismic zone, always tell us the local design parameters — they directly affect tonnage and joint design.
