Building in Southeast Asia: Code Differences in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines

Export Practice Xionglan Engineering Team

Three neighboring countries, three different codes, wind pressures and approval processes — bigger differences than you'd expect.

Southeast Asia accounted for 35% of Xionglan's export orders last year. The three most active markets differ more than you'd expect:

Indonesia: SNI code system, seismic-dominant design, with high intensities in some regions; imports need mill certificates and weld inspection records, and some projects require a locally licensed engineer's co-signature.

Vietnam: TCVN codes with high wind pressures in typhoon zones — roof wind-uplift design is critical; drawing approval is pragmatic, about 2–3 weeks.

Philippines: NSCP (US-based) — AISC-style drawings are well accepted; under combined typhoon and seismic demands, joint ductility needs generous margins.

Common advice: whichever country, feed local review comments back to the factory for design verification — far safer than fabricating from untouched domestic drawings. Xionglan provides code-compliance design reviews for Southeast Asian projects free of charge.
