Why do multi-story steel plants almost always use composite deck slabs? A look at schedule, stiffness and cost.
For multi-story steel plants, the mainstream floor is the composite deck slab: profiled steel sheeting acts as permanent formwork and bottom reinforcement, with concrete poured on top and connected via shear studs.
Three numbers matter. Schedule: after the deck is laid it becomes a working platform — no full scaffolding — and crews can walk on it about 3 days after pouring, roughly twice as fast as traditional formwork. Stiffness: composite action reduces beam depth by about 15%, protecting clear height. Cost: the sheeting adds expense, but saved formwork and propping usually offset it.
Design notes: vibrating equipment areas need vibration checks, and floor openings (ducts, hoist wells) must be reserved at the detailing stage — cutting them later destroys composite action.
